Zakat is one of the five pillars of Islam, obligatory upon every sane, adult Muslim who owns wealth reaching the nisab and held for a full lunar year. This page provides an interactive zakat calculator to help you determine the amount due precisely, alongside a detailed explanation of the zakat nisab and the conditions for its obligation.
Zakat is the third pillar of Islam, a financial obligation upon every sane, adult Muslim who owns wealth reaching the nisab threshold and held for a full lunar year (hawl). Enter your financial details below to calculate the amount due precisely.
This tool is an aid for approximating the calculation based on generally agreed-upon jurisprudential principles, and is not a substitute for consulting a qualified scholar or an accredited zakat authority for your specific situation, especially with complex finances such as businesses, shares, or long-term debts.
Zakat is obligatory upon every Muslim who is sane, adult, and free, and who owns zakatable wealth that has reached the nisab threshold and remained in their possession for a full lunar year without falling below the nisab during that time. There is no zakat on wealth used for basic needs such as a personal home, personal car, and household furniture — zakat applies to growing or potentially-growing wealth such as cash, gold, silver, and trade goods.
This is a matter of scholarly disagreement. The majority of jurists (the Maliki and Shafi'i schools) held that gold and silver jewellery intended for ordinary personal use carries no zakat, while the Hanafi school held that zakat is due on it regardless of whether it reaches the nisab. It is preferable to be cautious and pay zakat on jewellery if it reaches the nisab, or to consult a qualified scholar to determine the most suitable position for your situation.
Zakat on wealth is calculated by summing all your zakatable assets (cash, gold, silver, trade goods) and deducting outstanding debts, then comparing the result to the zakat nisab; if it reaches or exceeds it, you pay out 2.5% of the net amount as zakat.
The nisab is the minimum amount of wealth a Muslim must own before zakat becomes obligatory upon them, measured by the weight of 87.48 grams of gold or 612.36 grams of silver, based on the current market price of whichever is used.
